Vladimir Putin is a Russian politician and current president of Russia. He served as president from 2000 to 2008, and was re-elected for a third term in 2012. Putin was born to parents Maria and Vladimir Sr. on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad, Russia. He had two siblings, Viktor and Albert. Putin studied German and was active in sports during high school. He graduated from the Saint Petersburg State University in 1975 with a degree in International Law.

CAREER
Prior to politics, Putin worked as an intelligence officer in the KGB. He was stationed in East Germany from 1985 to 1990. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel the following year. Putin served on the Saint Petersburgh administration under Anatoly Sobchak from 1990 to 1996. He provided advise on foreign investments, international affairs and relations. He also served two years as Sobchak’s deputy chairman. Putin moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined Boris Yeltsin’s presidential administration in 1998. He served as Director of the Federal Security Service (1998-99), and later as Secretary of the Security Council (1999).

Putin succeeded Boris Yeltsin as the president of Russia. He served two consecutive presidential terms from 2000 to 2008. During his presidency, Putin was able to grow the Russian economy continuously. He also made a historic visit to Israel in 2005, the first by any Kremlin leader. Putin served as the prime minister of Russia from 2008 to 2012 under Dmitry Medvedev. He was elected for a third presidential term in 2012.
