Umberto Eco was an Italian author, educator semiotician and philosopher. He was best known for novels like ‘The Name of the Rose’, ‘Foucault’s Pendulum’ and ‘The Island of the Day Before’. He was born to Giovanna Bisio and Giulio Eco on January 5, 1932 in Alessandria, Italy. Eco was 5ft 10in tall. He studied philosophy and literature at the University of Turin, earning a Laurea degree in 1954.

CAREER
Eco found early work as an editor for Italy’s national broadcasting company, Radiotelevisione Italiana. His first book, The Aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas, was published in 1956. His second book, The Development of Medieval Aesthetics, was released three years later. He served as a lecturer at the University of Turin (1961-1964) and professor at the University of Bologna (1975-2007). Eco received honorary degrees from various universities including Indiana University Bloomington, Rutgers University and the University of Belgrade. He became an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1998 and was awarded the UCLA Medal in 2005.
