Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian, and screenwriter. He rose to prominence on the sitcoms ‘Mr. Bean’, ‘Blackadder’ and the sketch series ‘Not the Nine O’Clock News’. His film credits include Rat Race (2001), Johnny English (2003), and Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2006). Rowan Sebastian Atkinson was born on January 6, 1955, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. His parents were Eric and Ella. He has two older brothers, Rodney and Rupert. Atkinson attended Durham Choristers School followed by St. Bees School. He completed his BS degree in electrical engineering at Newcastle University and his Ms degree at the University of Oxford.

CAREER
Atkinson began exploring comedy in the mid-1970s while attending Oxford University. He worked alongside actor Richard Curtis and composer Howard Goodall at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1976. He starred in the BBC Radio comedy series, The Atkinson People (1978). Atkinson wrote for and starred in the sketch comedy show, Not the Nine O’Clock News. The series ran on BBC2 from October 1979 to March 1982 for a total of 27 episodes. He won a BAFTA Award in 1981 for best entertainment performance. He was also the youngest person in 1981 to have a one-man show in London’s West End.

Atkinson starred as “Edmund” in the BBC sitcom, Blackadder (1983-89). He created and starred as “Mr. Bean” in the ITV sitcom, Mr. Bean (1990-95). He also starred as inspector “Raymond Fowler” in The Thin Blue Line (1995-96). Atkinson’s early film credits include Never Say Never Again (1983) and The Appointments of Dennis Jennings (1989). He held supporting roles in Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993) with Charlie Sheen, and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) with Hugh Grant. He voiced the character “Zazu” in the Disney musical film, The Lion King (1994). His more recent films include Keeping Mum (2005), Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2007), and Johnny English Reborn (2011).
