ORIGIN Edit
Ralph Edmund Stanley was an American bluegrass musician and member of the Grand Ole Opry and the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. He grew up in the neighborhood of Big Spraddle Creek in Dickenson County. He graduated high school in May 1945 then served a year in the army.

CAREER
Stanley received his first banjo as a teenager and he was taught the clawhammer style of play by his mother. He formed the bluegrass duo ‘The Stanley Brothers’ in 1946 along with his older brother Carter. They started out performing on local radio stations like WNVA. They later moved to Bristol were they performed on WCYB. They also experimented with the style of picking used by Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. The Stanley Brothers were signed to Columbia Records in 1949. They also worked with the labels Rich-R-Tone, Mercury, Starday and King Records. The duo performed together for nearly two decades until Carter’s death in 1966.

Stanley continued performing with the Clinch Mountain Boys as a solo artist. The revived band consisted of Larry Sparks, Rory Lee Centers, Charlie Sizemore, and later Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley and Ralph II. Stanley was awarded an honorary Doctorate of music from Lincoln Memorial University in 1976. As a result, he was often times referred to as Dr. Ralph Stanley. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor in 1992. He won a Grammy Award in 2002 for his contribution to the album ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?’, and another one in 2003 for the album ‘Lost In The Lonesome Pines’.
