Nikki Haley is an American politician and member of the Republican Party. She is the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. She was the 116th Governor of South Carolina and a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Haley was born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa on January 20, 1972 in Bamberg, South Carolina. Her parents Raj and Ajit Randhawa are Indian Sikh immigrants. She has three siblings, Mitti, Charan and Simran. Haley attended Orangeburg Preparatory Schools in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She graduated from Clemson University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.

CAREER
Prior to politics, Haley worked for the waste recycling company, FCR Corporation. After college she worked as chief financial officer at her mother’s clothing company, Exotica International. Exotica operated from 1976 through 2008 and made upwards of $1 million per year in revenue.

In 1998, Haley was added to the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors. She was named to the board of directors of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce in 2003. She became president of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) in 2004. Haley challenged incumbent Republican Larry Koon for a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2004. She won the election and was sworn in on January 11, 2005. During her tenure, Haley promoted anti-tax laws, voted against bills in favor of abortion, and supported stronger immigration laws. She was re-elected in 2006 and again in 2008.

Haley was elected as the 116th Governor of South Carolina in 2010. She was endorsed by Mitt Romney, Jenny Sanford and Sarah Palin. Haley was sworn into office on January 12, 2011. She became the first Indian-American woman to hold that office in South Carolina. She was re-elected in 2014 for a second term. Haley delivered the Republican response to Barack Obama‘s final State of the Union address in January 2016. She supported fellow Republican Marco Rubio and later Ted Cruz during the 2016 presidential election. Haley is the United States Ambassador to the United Nations under President Donald Trump.
