Nate Thurmond was an American basketball Hall of Famer who played most of his career for the Golden State Warriors. Dubbed “Nate the Great”, he stood 6ft 11in tall and played the center or power forward positions. He was also the owner of Big Nate’s BBQ in San Francisco. Nathaniel Thurmond was born on July 25, 1941, in Akron, Ohio. He attended Central Hower high school where he played alongside Gus Johnson.

CAREER
Thurmond continued his education and basketball career at Bowling Green State University in 1960. He played three seasons with the Bowling Green Falcons and was named first-team All-American in 1963. Thurmond was selected by the San Francisco Warriors with the third overall pick in the 1963 NBA draft. He played opposite superstar Wilt Chamberlain from 1963 to 1965. Thurmond was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1964. He was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 1974 and later to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1976. He became the first player to record a quadruple-double in October 1974 with 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, and 12 blocks.

Thurmond was a 7x NBA All-Star who made four consecutive All-Star appearances from 1965-68. He was named to the All-Defensive First Team twice, and the All-Defensive Second Team thrice. Thurmond was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985. He’s also listed among the 50 Greatest NBA Players of all time. His #42 jersey was retired by his former teams, the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Nate Thurmond died on July 16, 2016, at the age of 74. His reported cause of death was leukemia. He was married to Marci and they had a son named Adam.
