Michelle Obama is an American lawyer, writer and the first African-American First Lady of the United States. She’s the wife of the 44th president of the U.S., Barack Obama. She was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, Marian, was a secretary, and her late father, Fraser Robinson, was a city water plant worker. She has an older brother, Craig, who’s a basketball coach. Michelle was raised in a bungalow in the South Shore of Chicago. She attended Whitney M. Young High School for gifted children. There she served as student government treasurer and graduated in 1981 as class salutatorian. Michelle earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Princeton University in 1985. CAREER
Michelle worked as an associate at the Sidley Austin law firm in Chicago from 1988 to 1991. She transitioned from law to public services in 1991. Michelle started out as assistant commissioner of planning and development at Chicago City Hall. She was named executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies in 1993. The program was established to train and prepare youths for job opportunities in public service. Michelle served as Associate Dean of Students Services at the University of Chicago from 1996 through 2005. She also worked as Vice President of Community and External Affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Michelle supported and campaigned for her husband during his run for presidency of the United States. She delivered memorable speeches at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 and 2012. Barack Obama won the 2008 presidential race and was sworn in on January 20, 2009. He was re-elected for a second term in 2012. Michelle also supported fellow First Lady Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential run. Hillary lost the race to Republican nominee Donald Trump.

As first lady, Michelle continued her work in public services. She tackled a number of social issues ranging from poverty to lack of higher education.
