Julian Assange is an Australian computer programmer, journalist, and activist. He’s the founder and editor in chief of WikiLeaks. Assange was born on July 3, 1971, in Townsville, Queensland. His biological parents are Christine Ann Hawkins and John Shipton. The two separated and Christine later married Brett Assange. That relationship ended in divorce a few years later. Assange attended several different schools during his childhood. He studied mathematics and computer programming at Central Queensland University followed by the University of Melbourne.

CAREER
Assange got his first computer at age 16. He formed the hacking group “International Subversives” in 1987 under the alias Mendax. The group hacked into several organizations including NASA, Citibank, the Pentagon and the US Department of Defense facilities. Assange was charged with 30+ counts of hacking in 1994. He was released on a good behavior bond after pleading guilty and paying a fine.

Assange began his career as a programmer and software developer in 1994. He worked on a number of projects including the Transmission Control Protocol port scanner strobe.c, PostgreSQL, and the Rubberhose deniable encryption system. Assange founded WikiLeaks in 2006. He serves as editor in chief and director of the organization. WikiLeaks collects and publishes classified information, news leaks, and other confidential information to the world. Assange moved to the United Kingdom in 2012 in an effort to avoid extradition to Sweden. He was granted asylum by the Ecuadorean government in 2012.
