Judith Kaye was a retired American judge who became the first female Chief Judge of the State of New York. She was born on August 4, 1938, in Monticello, New York. She completed her higher education at Barnard College (B.A.) followed by New York University School of Law (LL.B). Kaye was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1963. She started out working for the law firm, Sullivan & Cromwell. She served as associate judge of the New York Court of Appeals from 1983-1993. She was appointed Chief Judge by Mario Cuomo on March 23, 1993. She retired in 2008 and was appointed Chairman of the Commission on Judicial Nomination 2009. She helped to establish the non-profit organization, Center for Court Innovation. She has written numerous publications and received several awards/honors over the years. In 2006, she presented a 27-page dissent in support of marriage equality and same-sex couples. She was married to attorney Stephen Rackow Kaye and they had three children together. Judith Kaye died on January 7, 2016, at the age of 77. Her cause of death was cancer.
