John Bolton is an American lawyer, diplomat and the 25th United States Ambassador to the United Nations. He succeeded H. R. McMaster as National Security Advisor of the United States (April 9, 2018 – September 10, 2019). John Robert Bolton was born on November 20, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland. His mother, Virginia, was a housewife, and his father, Edward, a fireman. Bolton spent his childhood in Yale Heights. He attended McDonogh School, Yale College, and Yale Law School. He completed a B.A. in 1970 and a J.D. in 1974. He was also a member of the Yale Political Union.

CAREER
Bolton began his legal career at the law firm ‘Covington & Burling’ in 1974. He worked at their Washington office as an associate from 1974 through 1981. He later worked for the firms ‘Lerner, Reed, Bolton & McManus’ and ‘Kirkland & Ellis’. Bolton served as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division from 1988-1989 under President Ronald Reagan. He was named as the 18th Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs under President George H. W. Bush. He also served as senior vice president at the American Enterprise Institute (1997-2001).

During the George W. Bush administration, Bolton served as the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs (2001-05). He held office as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from August 2005 until his resignation in December 2006. Bolton was a foreign policy advisor for Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential election. He was appointed as senior advisor to the Freedom Capital Investment Management in September 2015. Bolton served as the 27th United States National Security Advisor under the Donald Trump administration. He held said office from April 9, 2018, until his resignation on September 10, 2019. He was succeeded by Charles Kupperman.
