John Hurt was an English Oscar-nominated film and television actor. His acting credits include The Elephant Man, Midnight Express, Harry Potter and Alien. John Vincent Hurt was born on January 22, 1940 in Chesterfield, England. His parents were Phyllis and Arnould Hurt. He had an older brother named Anselm and an adopted sister named Monica. Hurt attended Grimsby Art School followed by Central Saint Martin’s College. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1962.

CAREER
Hurt made his film debut in the romantic-drama, The Wild and the Willing (1962). He followed up with a more prominent role as “Richard Rich” in Fred Zinnemann’s A Man for All Seasons (1966). He picked up a BAFTA nomination for his role as “John Christie” in 10 Rillington Place (1971). Hurt portrayed British gay icon “Quentin Crisp” in the 1975 biographical film, The Naked Civil Servant. His performance earned him a BAFTA for best actor. Other early films include Midnight Express (1978), Alien (1979) and The Hit (1984).

Hurt starred as “John Merrick” opposite Anthony Hopkins in the historical drama, The Elephant man (1980). He won an Academy Award nomination for best actor. Hurt held the role of “Garrick Ollivander” in the Harry Potter film franchise, and as “Trevor Bruttenholm” in the Hellboy films. His more recent films include V for Vendetta (2006) with Hugo Weaving, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) with Gary Oldman, and Jackie (2016) with Natalie Portman. Hurt’s television credits include Doctor Who, and I, Claudius. His voice roles include “Hazel” from Watership Down (1978), “The Horned King” from The Black Cauldron (1985), and “Kilgharrah” from the series Merlin (2008-12).

Hurt was honored with the BAFTA lifetime achievement award in 2012 for his contributions to British film. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in July 2015 for his services to drama.

John Hurt died on January 25, 2017 at the age of 77. His official cause of death was pancreatic cancer. Hurt was diagnosed with early-stage pancreatic cancer in June 2015. He underwent treatment and his cancer went into remission later that year. His death came three days after his 77th birthday. Hurt was 5ft 8in tall and of English ancestry. His net worth was estimated at $20 million.

Hurt was married four times to wives, Annette Robertson (1962-64), Donna Peacock (1984-90), Joan Dalton (1990-96) and Anwen Rees-Myers (2005-17). His third marriage resulted in two sons, Alexander and Nicholas. Hurt dated French Model ‘Marie-Lise Volpeliere-Pierrot’ from 1967 until her accidental death in 1983. He also dated Dublin presenter ‘Sarah Owens’ for several years.
