John Hurt was an English Oscar-nominated film and television actor. His acting credits include The Elephant Man, Midnight Express, Harry Potter and Alien. John Vincent Hurt was born on January 22, 1940 in Chesterfield, England. His parents were Phyllis and Arnould Hurt. He had an older brother named Anselm and an adopted sister named Monica. Hurt attended Grimsby Art School followed by Central Saint Martin’s College. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1962.
CAREER
Hurt made his film debut in the romantic-drama, The Wild and the Willing (1962). He followed up with a more prominent role as “Richard Rich” in Fred Zinnemann’s A Man for All Seasons (1966). He picked up a BAFTA nomination for his role as “John Christie” in 10 Rillington Place (1971). Hurt portrayed British gay icon “Quentin Crisp” in the 1975 biographical film, The Naked Civil Servant. His performance earned him a BAFTA for best actor. Other early films include Midnight Express (1978), Alien (1979) and The Hit (1984).
Hurt starred as “John Merrick” opposite Anthony Hopkins in the historical drama, The Elephant man (1980). He won an Academy Award nomination for best actor. Hurt held the role of “Garrick Ollivander” in the Harry Potter film franchise, and as “Trevor Bruttenholm” in the Hellboy films.
