Jim Nabors was an American actor and singer. He starred as “Gomer Pyle” on The Andy Griffith Show (1962-64) and on the spin-off Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (1964-69). His credits include The Jim Nabors Hour, The Lost Saucer, and the films Stroker Ace (1983) and Cannonball Run II (1984). He recorded more than 25 albums, including The Heart Touching Magic of Jim Nabors (1980). James Thurston Nabors was born on June 12, 1930, in Sylacauga, Alabama. CAREER

He worked as a film cutter in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and later for NBC in Los Angeles, California. In 1961, Nabors made his television debut on ‘The Steve Allen Show’ with the help of Bill Dana. Other early television appearances include ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ and ‘The Danny Kaye Show’. He had an uncredited role in the comedy film Take Her, She’s Mine (1963) starring James Stewart and Sandra Dee.

Nabors auditioned and landed his breakout role as “Gomer Pyle” on The Andy Griffith Show. He appeared in 23 episodes from 1962 to 1964. The role of Gomer Pyle was reprised in the CBS spin-off Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (1964-69), and in the TV film, Return to Mayberry (1986). Nabors hosted his own variety series The Jim Nabors Hour (1969-71). It earned him a Daytime Emmy Award nomination. He starred as “Fum” opposite Ruth Buzzi on the ABC series The Lost Saucer (1976). His television credits also include The Carol Burnett Show, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, and The Love Boat. Nabors had a supporting role in the film, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton. He appeared in two more films with Reynolds, Stroker Ace (1983) and Cannonball Run II (1984). Nabors was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991. He was inducted into the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame in 2006.
