Geraldo Rivera is an American talk show host, journalist, attorney, and author. He hosted the talk show Geraldo (1987-98) and the television news magazine Geraldo at Large (2005-14). His credits include The Five, Good Morning America, and 20/20. Gerald Michael Rivera was born on July 4, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York. His mother, Lillian, was a restaurant worker, and his father, Cruz, a cab driver. He has three siblings, Craig, Irene, and Sharon. Rivera is a graduate of West Babylon High School. He earned his BS degree in business administration from the University of Arizona (1965) and his JD from Brooklyn Law School (1969). CAREER
Rivera began his legal career in Manhattan, New York. He worked with organizations like the Community Action for Legal Services, the National Lawyers Guild, and the Young Lords. His work caught the attention of news reporter Al Primo who helped him secure a job with ABC. Rivera was hired as a reporter for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in 1970. He won a Peabody Award in 1972 for Willowbrook: The Last Disgrace. Rivera served as a reporter and co-host of Good Morning America from 1973 to 1977. He served as a correspondent for the news magazine 20/20 from 1978 to 1985. He won two Emmy Awards for his work on 20/20, including one for outstanding investigative journalism. Rivera appeared on other ABC programs such as ‘Nightline’ and ‘Good Night America’. He was dropped from the network in 1985.
