Edward Albee was a Pulitzer Prize winning American playwright. His popular works include The Zoo Story, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? Albee was born Edward Harvey on March 12, 1928 in Washington, D.C. His biological mother was Louise Harvey and his adoptive parents were Frances and Reed Albee. The adoptive family inherited great wealth from their vaudeville ancestor. Albee attended Lawrenceville School in New Jersey followed by The Choate School in Connecticut. He also studied briefly at the Valley Forge Military Academy and at Trinity College.

CAREER
Albee worked a number of odd jobs prior to his career as a playwright. His 1959 plays include The Zoo Story, The American Dream, The Death of Bessie Smith and The Sandbox. Albee rose to prominence with his 1962 Broadway debut, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The play won a Tony Award for Best Play. It was adopted into a 1966 motion picture starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Albee won Pulitzer Prizes in drama for A Delicate Balance (1967), Seascape (1975), and Three Tall Women (1994). Other notable plays include, The Man Who Had Three Arms and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. Albee was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1999. He’s also a recipient of the Tony Lifetime Achievement Award, and the National Medal of Arts. He’s the founder of The Edward F. Albee Foundation which was established in 1967.

Edward Albee died on September 16, 2016 at the age of 88. No official cause of death was reported. However, he had suffered from diabetes. Albee was openly gay. His longtime partner ‘Jonathan Thomas’ died in 2005 from cancer. He previously dated William Flanagan and Terrence McNally.
