Dwayne Alonzo Washington was a former American professional basketball player. He stood 6ft 2in tall and played the point guard position. He was known for his crossover and the “Shake ‘N Bake” maneuvers. Washington was born on January 6, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York. The nickname “The Pear” was given to him in comparison to former basketball guard, Earl Monroe. He attended Boys and Girls High School followed by Syracuse University. Washington played three seasons for the Orange and led the team in steals and assists. He was the Big East Rookie of the Year, and 3× First-team All-Big East. His #31 jersey was retired by Syracuse in 1996
CAREER
Washington was selected by the New Jersey Nets with the 13th overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft. He played with the Nets from 1986-1988 averaging 9 points per game. Washington was selected by the Miami Heat with the 17th pick in the 1988 NBA Expansion draft. He played with the Heat for a year before being released in 1989. He continued his basketball career in the Continental Basketball Association where he played for the Rapid City Thrillers (1989-1990) and San Jose Jammers (1990-1991).
PERSONAL
Dwayne Washington died on April 20, 2016 at the age of 52. His reported cause of death was brain cancer. He was first diagnosed with the disease in 1995, but it was in remission for several years. The brain tumor resurfaced in summer 2015 and he was underwent surgery in the fall. Washington was married once and divorced. He’s survived by his partner, Debra Busacco, his three children, Dwayne Jr., Damara and Tatiana, and four grandchildren.
