Don McGahn is an American attorney, partner at Jones Day, and former Federal Election Commissioner. He was named White House Counsel for President Donald Trump in January 2017. McGahn was born on June 16, 1969, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland followed by the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and computer applications. McGahn earned his J.D. from Widener University School of Law in 1994. He also studied briefly at Georgetown University Law Center.

CAREER
McGahn practiced law at the Patton Boggs international law firm in Washington, D.C. He served as chief counsel for the National Republican Congressional Committee from 1999 to 2008. He represented Congressman Tom DeLay in 2003 and again in 2005. McGahn was nominated to the Federal Election Commission in 2008 by then President George W. Bush. He held that office from July 2008 until his resignation in September 2013. During his tenure, McGahn oversaw a number of changes in campaign finance laws.

McGahn rejoined Patton Boggs as partner in 2013. He became a partner at Jones Day law firm in 2014. McGahn served as campaign counsel to Donald Trump during his 2016 bid for president of the United States. He was named White House Counsel under the Trump administration. He was sworn into office on January 20, 2017.
