Danai Gurira is an American actress, playwright and model. She stars as “Michonne” in ‘The Walking Dead‘ television series. Her film credits include The Visitor, and Mother of George. She wrote the 2009 Tony Award-winning play Eclipsed. Gurira was born to parents Josephine and Roger on February 14, 1978 in Grinnell, Iowa. She has three older siblings, Shingai, Chiwoniso and Tare. Gurira and her family moved to Harare, Zimbabwe in 1983, shortly after Zimbabwe gained independence. She attended Dominican Convent High School in Harare. Upon returning to the United States, Gurira studied at Macalester College followed by New York University. She earned a BA in psychology and a MFA in acting respectively.

CAREER
Gurira had early success as a stage actor and playwright. She co-wrote and starred as “Abigail” in the 2005 off-Broadway play, In the Continuum. She won an Obie Award and a Helen Hayes Award for her contribution. Gurira made her Broadway debut in August Wilson’s 2009 play, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Her 2009 play titled ‘Eclipsed’ premiered Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 2015. It was transferred to Broadway the following year. Eclipsed won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Play.

Gurira made her television debut in a 2004 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She had a recurring role as “Jill” in the drama series, Treme (2010-11). Her feature film debut was The Visitor (2007) with Richard Jenkins. She starred opposite Isaach de Bankole in the 2013 Nigerian drama, Mother of George. Gurira voiced the character “Fury” from the animated film Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast (2015). She portrays political activist ‘Afeni Shakur‘ in the biographical film, All Eyez on Me (2017).

In 2012, Gurira was cast as “Michonne” in the AMC horror-drama series ‘The Walking Dead’. She was added to the main cast as of season 3. She won a NAACP Image Award nomination in 2016 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The show also stars, Andrew Lincoln, Chandler Riggs, Josh McDermitt and Steven Yeun.
