Dan Hicks was an American singer, songwriter, rhythm guitarist and founder of the band ‘Hot Licks’. He was born on December 9, 1941 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He moved to Santa Rosa, California at age 5 with his family. He started out playing drums in school and later earned a spot on the local radio program ‘Time Out for Teens’. He studied broadcasting at San Francisco State College before joining ‘The Charlatans’ band in 1965 as a drummer.
CAREER
Hicks went on to form his own band, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, in 1967. They signed to Epic Records and released the album ‘Original Recordings’ in 1969. The band reformed a couple years later and released the successful ‘Last Train to Hicksville’ album in 1973. Their other notable albums include ‘Where’s The Money?’ and ‘Striking It Rich’. Hicks disband ‘Hot Licks’ in 1973 claiming he didn’t want to be a bandleader anymore. He formed a new band, The Acoustic Warriors, in the 1980s and released the album ‘Shootin’ Straight’ in 1996.
