Chris Matthews is an American talk show host, news anchor, political commentator, and author. He’s best known for hosting the shows ‘Hardball’ on MSNBC, and ‘The Chris Matthews Show’ on NBC. His published works include Now, Let Me Tell You What I Really Think (2001) and American: Beyond Our Grandest Notions (2002). Christopher John Matthews was born on December 17, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents were Mary Teresa Shields and Herb Matthews. He has four brothers, Herb, Jim, Bruce, and Charlie. Matthews graduated from La Salle College High School in 1963. He earned his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1967. He also studied economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Matthews served in the U.S. Peace Corps from 1968 to 1970. He was stationed in Swaziland, Africa, as a trade development adviser. Matthews began his political career in the early 1970s as an aide to U.S. Senator Frank Moss. In 1974, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives seat as a Democrat. He served as a presidential speechwriter during the Jimmy Carter administration. He served as top aide to House Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Jr. from 1981 to 1987.

Matthews began his career in media as a print journalist. He was the Washington bureau chief for The San Francisco Examiner from 1987 to 2000. He also spent two years as a columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle. During his tenure, he covered events such as the 1989 “fall of the Berlin Wall”. In 1997, Matthews premiered his signature talk show on CNBC. The program was moved to MSNBC starting in 1999. It airs weekdays at 7 PM ET for 60 minutes. Matthews hosted ‘The Chris Matthews Show’ on NBC from 2002 to 2013. He was a regular panelist on ‘The McLaughlin Group’ hosted by John McLaughlin. He made cameo appearances in films like Swing Vote (2008) with Kevin Costner, State of Play (2009) with Russell Crowe, and The Campaign (2012) with Will Ferrell.

Matthews’s first book ‘Hardball: How Politics is Played, Told by One Who Knows the Game’ was published in 1988. His other published works include Kennedy & Nixon: The Rivalry that Shaped Postwar America (1996), Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero (2011), Tip and the Gipper: When Politics Worked (2013), and Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit (2017).
