Azealia Amanda Banks is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. She was born on May 31, 1991 in Manhattan, New York. Banks lost her father to pancreatic cancer when she was a toddler. She was raised by her mother in Harlem. Banks attended Catholic School followed by the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts. She also took dance lessons at the National Dance Institute.

CAREER
Banks began her career performing in various off-Broadway musicals at the Tada! Youth Theater. Her stage credits include Rabbit Sense, Sleepover and Heroes. She followed up with a lead role in the stage production of the musical comedy, City of Angels. She ventured into music following an unsuccessful audition for TBS and Nickelodeon.

In 2008, Banks adopted the stage name “Miss Bank$”. Her early recordings include “Gimme a Chance” and “Seventeen”. She was signed to XL Recordings but their business relationship was short lived. Banks released her debut single “212” on December 6, 2011. The song was certified Gold in the UK and has sold over 250 thousand copies in the US. Banks signed a record deal with Interscope and Polydor Records in 2012. Her debut EP ‘1991’ was released on May 28, 2012 and peaked at #1 on the Top Heatseekers Albums chart. Her free debut mixtape ‘Fantasea’ was released two months later to critical acclaim. She’s collaborated with recording artists Lady Gaga and Kanye West on a couple of tracks that never made the cut.

Banks signed a recording contract with Prospect Records in 2014. Her debut studio album ‘Broke with Expensive Taste’ was released later that year on November 7, 2014. The album peaked at #30 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Yung Rapunxel”, “Heavy Metal and Reflective” and “Chasing Time”. Banks is reportedly working on her second album ‘Business & Pleasure’. Her second mixtape ‘Slay-Z’ was released on March 24, 2016 and features the song “The Big Big Beat”. Banks posed nude for Hugh Hefner‘s Playboy magazine back in February 2015. She’s slated to make her feature film debut in the 2016 musical drama film, Coco, directed by RZA.
