Arnold Palmer was an American professional golfer. Dubbed “The King”, he’s considered one of the greatest golfers of all time. He’s won 7 major championships: 4x Masters Tournament, 2x The Open Championship, and a U.S. Open. Palmer was born to parents Doris and Milfred on September 10, 1929, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He had three siblings, Lois, Sandra, and Jerry. Palmer attended Latrobe High School followed by Wake Forest University. He also served three years in the United States Coast Guard.
CAREER
Palmer was taught the ins and outs of golfing by his father. He won two interscholastic championships and was offered a golf scholarship to Wake Forest. Palmer won multiple Atlantic Coast Conference titles but decided to drop out of college in 1950 following the death of his friend. He returned to form in 1954, winning the U.S. Amateur championship.
Palmer turned professional in 1954. He won the 1955 Canadian Open followed by his first Masters Tournament in 1958. Palmer won the 1960 U.S. Open and was named the PGA Player of the Year. He won the Ryder Cup in 1963 while serving as the captain of the U.S. team. His last major title was the 1964 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Palmer was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Other achievements and awards include the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award (1998), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2004), and the Congressional Gold Medal (2009).
