Andrew Stephen Grove was a Hungarian-born American businessman, engineer, author, and former CEO and Chairman of Intel Corporation. He was born András István Gróf on September 2, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary. His father ‘George’ was a dairyman and his mother ‘Maria’ worked as a bookkeeping clerk. Grove escaped into Austria during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. He was 20 years old at the time. He immigrated to the United States a year later.

CAREER
Grove studied at the City College of New York, earning his BS degree in chemical engineering in 1960. He completed his Ph.D. three years later at the University of California in Berkeley. Grove began his career at Fairchild Semiconductor in 1963. He worked as a researcher and was later promoted to assistant director of development. His advanced knowledge of integrated circuits and microcomputers prompted his first book ‘Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Devices (1967)’.

In 1968, Grove joined Intel along with co-founders Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. He started out working as the company’s director of engineering. Grove became Intel’s president in 1979 and CEO in 1987. Intel started out manufacturing DRAMs and in 1971 they created the world’s first microprocessor. They created the 8088 microchip in 1978 that was used primarily by IBM on their personal computers.

Andrew Grove passed away on March 21, 2016, at the age of 79. The cause of death was not disclosed. However, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease back in 2000. Grove was married to ‘Eva Kastan’ from 1958 until his death in 2016. They had two daughters and eight grandchildren. Andrew Grove had a net worth of $500 million. His generous donation of $26 million to The City College of New York in 2006 was used to build the “Grove School of Engineering”. Grove was awarded the ‘Heinz Award’ in 1995 and the IEEE Medal of Honor in 2000. He was named ‘Man of the Year’ by Time magazine in 1997.
