6lack is an American singer/songwriter and rapper. He’s rose to prominence with the Platinum-selling single “Prblms”. His debut album, Free 6lack (2016), was released by LoveRenaissance and Interscope Records. 6lack was born Ricardo Valdez Valentine on June 24, 1992, in Baltimore, Maryland. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was about 5 years old. He has two younger siblings. 6lack attended Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia. He dropped out in 2011 to focus on his music career.

6lack started out as a battle rapper in middle school. He grew up listening to R&B artists like Sade, Brandy and Usher. He also gained early exposure recording in the studio with his father. 6lack inked his first recording contract in 2011. He spent roughly 5 years with the label. During his tenure, he struggled financially and the label restricted his creativity. In 2015, he was featured on the compilation album, Bears Like This Too, by Spillage Village. 6lack is currently signed to the creative agency LoveRenaissance (LVRN) and the label Interscope Records. His early SoundCloud uploads include “Bless Me” and “Loyal”. His breakout single “Prblms” was released in September 2016. It racked up more than 37 million spins on SoundCloud and the official video has been viewed 77+ million times on YouTube. The single charted at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100. It rose to Platinum certification with more than 1 million units sold.

6lack’s debut studio album, Free 6lack, was released in November 2016 by LoveRenaissance and Interscope. It was supported by the singles “Prblms” and “Ex Calling”. The album peaked at #34 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the Top Rap Albums chart. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for best urban contemporary album. 6lack’s more recent singles include “That Far” and “First F#@k” with Jhene Aiko. He was featured on the track “Spar” alongside Dreezy and Kodak Black. The “Prblms” rapper was also featured on The Weeknd‘s 2017 Legend of the Fall North American tour.
